When the water stops running down your drain, there are a lot of things that could cause that to happen. One of the things that it could be is a full septic tank. A full septic tank doesn't have any more room for the waste that you are producing. There are several steps to dealing with your septic tank at this point. 

Find the Access Point

The first thing that is going to happen is that the tech is going to find the access point for your septic tank. Depending on where you live, this may be underground, and the tech will have to dig for it. In some states, you may have a vent that will lead to the access point. It will help the tech if you know about where the tank is and about where they may need to dig to uncover it. Hopefully, there won't be any waste outside of the tank, which could mean a more expensive repair. 

Open the Tank

Once the tech knows where the tank is and has gotten to it, they are going to open it to see if it is full. The tech should be able to quickly tell you if that is the problem since they should be able to see the level of the matter in the tank. The tech will either tell you the tank is full and needs to be pumped, or they will tell you that there may be some other kind of problem. 

Pumping the Tank

The actual pumping process is pretty quick. The tech will put a vacuum hose into the tank which leads to a tanker truck. That hose will suck up all the material in your tank and empty it out. When the tank is emptied out, the tech will ask you to flush a toilet or run the faucet so that they will be able to see if anything goes down the drain into the tank. That will let them know if there is another problem further up the septic system which needs to be worked on.
